The Jakarta Post
The New Year seems like yesterday, but in the fashion world time flies faster than a supersonic jet. Agencies providing trend forecasts for the fashion industry have to race to release tip offs for boutiques, designers and individual buyers.
Here is the prediction: If you don't already have a one-shoulder dress in your wardrobe, you had better buy an origami-style or pleated dress soon. This is going to be a hit next year.
David Landart from a leading trend forecasting agency, Carlin International, says fashion forecasting is crucial for both retail brands and exporters, because trends tell them in advance about best sellers and what buyers will be interested in - whether it's new fabrics, new shapes or new colors.
"For factories, this is something new because they are still more *make to order' oriented. It can help them to become more proactive instead of being only reactive.
"These days waiting for orders is waiting to die. Most factories are not price competitive with low cost countries, such China, Bangladesh and Pakistan," Landart said.
Consequently, he said, if you cannot compete with on the price side then you have to compete on the added-value side (in creativity and design) because buyers expect their suppliers to be able to, in a limited extent, complement buyers' collections with their own creations.
"Basically the trends lead the market and nowadays every single actor in design chains is interested by this kind of information. You design a product in order to sell it. Trends and trend books are a support tool, a market guideline for creativity."
Irvan Noeman from Indonesian Creative Center says trend forecasts from international agencies like Carlin could help develop the products of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Indonesia since traditionally they have been less successful captivating international markets compared to their regional peers.
"Indonesia has around 300 ethnicities. Imagine how many designs we can decode from those," he said.
Decoding, along with identification and translation, are the steps Carlin International uses to forecast trends.
The first step is identification, in which the agency recognizes emerging trends from existing things (not necessarily fashion related) and selects the most relevant new trends (at conceptual/lifestyle level). The designers at Carlin International later decode these trends in terms of design (colors, materials, shapes, graphics, textures and finishing) and translate them into terms of finished products for specific sectors (menswear, women's wear etc.)
"We work on two collections a year, for spring-summer and fall-winter. It takes us five months to complete our trend book collections on colors, prints, fabrics and style books for, among others, men's wear, women's wear, kids wear, sports wear and lingerie," Landart said.
Carlin International must work two years ahead because fabric suppliers need to know the trends eighteen months in advance, garment manufacturers one year ahead (same as trade fair), retail brands between six months and one year, and end users and fashion magazines three to six months ahead.
The agency has 27 offices worldwide (eight of them in Asia) and all of its 35 designers spend most of their time traveling overseas to develop collections for our customers. Consequently, the trends are neither French nor European but genuinely international with a French touch.
Irvan said that with the trend forecast, his organization would foster the top four small to medium enterprise industries (fashion, home-furnishing, crafts and food labeling-packaging) over the next two years.
After assessing SMEs, his organization would build SMEs' capacities through workshops, prototype-making and assisting in production.
"We will also organize international expos and promotions to expand relations between SMEs and buyers."
But I want to say that woodcarving’s handicraft in Jepara is not only handicraft, but also art. In Queen Kalinyamat, Gebyok is one of exemplary masterpiece of wood carving. Gebyok is art, the transmission of feeling the artist has experienced. woodcarving is never form for form's sake. Gebyok is a form. It is never something abstract; it is always a sign of something. It is about human wisdom...

Gebyok emerged in Queen Kalinyamat era. Gebyok is wood house that full of beautiful wood carving. Gebyok is created to reach practical, ethical and esthetical need. As practical need, gebyok is decent house for family who living in everyday. As ethical need, gebyok have sign for inhabitant about spiritual message. Woodcarving (SP Gustami, 2008) in Gebyok is message about human destination: harmony, wellbeing, and peace. Gebyok is full of harmony’s design, sign about stairway to heaven, ascending and descending of ancestry’s soul. Swastika is symbol of harmony and balance of living. Bud of bamboo is symbol of regeneration, fertility, and sustainability of living. Kala Makara design is symbol of love among mother and children.
Today Gebyok is everlasting as Indonesia furniture Cultural Heritage. It is one of Indonesian Masterpiece product. Gebyok is full of metaphor and articulation about human wisdom: wellbeing. A great work of art bears its meaning on its face. Gebyok is not only handicraft, but great work, because it have full of meaning.
Yes, Gebyok is not only traditional house of Jepara, but also traditional house of Kudus. Gebyok is expensive house, so so many rich man from Kudus bought it. Even, now, Gebyok is associated with Kudus. The traditional house of Kudus that mostly build before year 1810 M, ever reach the glorious time and become a symbol of prosperity for the owners. The Kudus Kulon area environment was formed with the particular existency of the traditional house of Kudus.
Rise awareness to be keen on and proud to the own regional historical culture, create a long dedication of efforts to maintain the most excellent of the culture values to stay exist and admitted its present, nationally and internationally.
The carving art of Kudus dominate by lotus flower as the meaning of Hindu religion. Sunan Kudus introduced a carving dominated by jasmine flowers that described united one to another. The meaning of jasmine was to describe that Islam religion at that time was a small community but it like jasmine, even small, could give fragrance to the sorrounding area. Jasmine made united in one to another to describe that everybody in neighborhood were live in peace even there were differences in the religion.
The fascinating wooden carved at the traditional house of Kudus must be come from the very skilled woodcarvers. Then, from where the woodcarvers came from?
The carving style of the wooden traditional house of Kudus was quite distinct from the other famous carving centre in Java, Jepara. Historically, Kudus was a carving centre long before it developed as a skill in Jepara. Carving was introduced to Kudus when an emigrant from the famous carving city of Yunan - China, The Ling Sing, arrived in the 15th century. He came to Kudus not only to spread Islamic teachings but also to devote his skills to the art of woodcarving, and his style, Sung Ging, was famous for its smooth and wonderful woodcarving masterpieces.
The Ling Sing was wellknown as mubaligh (spreader of Islam) called Kiai telingsing. The name of Kiai Telingsing until now use as a name of a street in Kudus city. There is a kampong or village surrounding the street called Sunggingan that predicted came from the Sun Ging name. The area, at the past, was belief as the resident of the woodcarvers and carpenters from the devotion of Kiai Telingsing skills.

From the 16th to the 18th century, woodcarvers in Kudus received many orders to construct wooden houses. The main material - highest quality teak - was supplied from Blora's, Tuban's and Bojonegoro's forest. From the 19th century, however, high quality teak became scarcer and scarcer and this, in turn, discouraged the woodcarvers of Kudus to develop their skills.
The carving skills also belong to Jepara's people and has been very famous until now. There is an opinion, which said that wooden carved art in Kudus also done by woodcarvers from Jepara, eventhough in the reality it different in the carving models, especially in the mission and filosophy.
According the history, Mantingan mosque in Jepara has wall that made from carved white stone with the flower motifs that was masterwork of a Chinese called Tji Wie Gwan who brought by Raden toyib to Jepara after come back from his Islamic study in Campa for five years. Raden Toyib then married with Ratu (queen) Kalinyamat, the very famous Jepara's queen at that time.
For his achievement in build Mantingan mosque at the year of 1559, Queen Kalinyamat and her husband gave a new name for Tji Wie Gwan to become Sungging Badar Duwung, Sungging means carving expert, Badar same with stone and Duwung means tatah (tool for carving).
This Sungging Badar Duwung who then recognized as the root source of the Jepara's carving art which consecutively knowing in all over Indonesia and the world. According to history, he was too takes a part in the erection of mosque in Loram (a name of area in Kudus) and mosque of Menara Kudus.
Sungging Badar Duwung then devoted his skill to the surrounding community in Jepara as well as in Kudus and presented high skilled carvers that from time to time growth in numbers. This skill direct and indirect was useful in the process of developing the traditional house of Kudus.
It has the natural beauties of grain and variety of texture, although it lacks the weight, durability, and monumental quality of stone.

Woodcarving in Jepara: smooth as silk, detailed as hair

Jepara is woodcarving center in Indonesia. Best teak in the world is in Java, island which Jepara within it.

One of tree teak forest in the world is in Indonesia, which Java and Jepara within it. Teak forest is 1.1 million hectares in Java. Teak in the world is about 3.4 million hectares. Teak was introduced into the island of Java, for reasons both religious and economic, by Hindu monks, in the 14th century, with seed from India (IVAN BEHAGHEL , 1999). Here, teak found very good growing onditions. It regenerates naturally in several sites in the island, and so much so that at the turn of the century it was even thought to come originally from Indonesia. The Dutch iscovered teak in Indonesia in the 17th century and very swiftly started to log it intensively. In the early 19th century, rules restricting logging were drawn up, at the same time as Forest Management Centres were set up by the State, with an economic goal. These centres, which were at first answerable to the Ministry of Agriculture, became independent, and assumed a special status in 1961, with the name of Perhutani. In 1978, they formed two groups : Persero Perhutani on the island of Kalimantan, and Perum Perhutani, on the island of Java. This latter has become quite important and presides over the largest man-made teak forest in the world, totalling almost 1.1 million hectares, split into 650 000 hectares in production, in other words actively managed, and 450 000 hectares that are “protected”, encompassing fairly inaccessible plots that are not logged, and old plots that are unmanaged, and regenerate naturally.

Wood management

Woods is vulnerable to dampness, crack, fire, and the destructive activity of vermin and termite, especially if we deliver wood products from Indonesia to four season country. What must to be done?

Jepara has experience to sell woodcarving, furniture and sculpture to four season country. So they have accumulated knowledge to manage wood.

The first step in Jepara wood management is select suitable wood. So many kind of wood, kind of uses, kind of price. So every products have a goal, we must select material to meet the goal. See Indonesia’s wood characteristic, to see strength, gravity, and durability.

The second step is kiln dry to prevent crack. Wood is hydroscopic material, so this material is very ease to shrink. So, if wood is drying in kiln dry, it prevent wood from crack. That is why Jepara have many hundreds kiln dry to improve Wood Products.

Source:

Technorati Tags: Jepara is the best furniture city in the world

Jepara Dalam Angka 2006

www.gojepara.com

IVAN BEHAGHEL , 1999, THE STATE OF TEAK (TECTONA GRANDIS L.F.) It is hoped that it will
give a certain value that is profitable and production value to the organization member to
breakthrough international furniture market. In public forest, the farmer are able to plant,
take care of and enjoy the harvest, thus furniture industry are helped.”
Rachel Butler, UK TTF explains,’The TTF is on the industry’s side; we want a
sustainable timber trade because we believe in timber and we are committed to
supporting our suppliers to meet the changing requirements in the EU and UK.’

European timber buyers heard the good news that Indonesian industry is well placed to
meet this challenge. Independent auditing of current timber harvesting under various
private sector schemes meets requirements for legality in most sensitive international
markets, and once the new national scheme requirements are available, modifications in
business practice for those companies currently operating legal verification schemes
should be minimal. For further information contact Rachel Butler of TTF (rbutler@ttf.co.uk).

About FLEGT-VPA
FLEGT is an abbreviation for Forest Law Enforcement, Governance, and Trade. FLEGT
is an initiative of the European Union to curb illegal logging and foster sustainable forest
management through trade mechanisms. For further information on FLEGT please
contact Thibaut Portevin (Thibaut.portevin@ec.europa.eu) or Andy Roby
(Andyroby2001@yahoo.com).

About ASMINDO
ASMINDO is a place for Indonesia’s furniture & craft businessmen, and also for half made
industrial furniture. ASMINDO is an independent organization, non-politic and non-profitable
organization. ASMINDO also becoming the facilitator for Furniture & Craft Industry in trading
business, marketing/promotion act, also as a legal help according to the current bills which also facilitate the communication between member of the organization and the government, Furniture & Craft companies, local social trading organization called ‘Koperasi’, crafter’s workshops, and half made furniture & craft. Jepara means a merchants settlement, which trades to all over area. According to book " New History of Tang Dynasty (618-906 M)" noting that, in the year 674 M, a man so called Yi-Tsing have visited Ho-Ling country or Kaling or Kalingga, which is also referred as Java or Japa. It is believed that the location is at Keling, in Jepara area this time. A woman so called Queen Shima leads this country. Queen Shima is very consistent and strict in leading its people.

But according to a man so called Tome Pires (a Portuguese writer), he wrote in its book " Suma Oriental", Jepara is just recognized by at 15 century ( 1470 M), as a small commerce port, which is just dwelt by 90 - 100 people and led by Aryo Timur. This reside is under governance of Demak. Later Aryo

Timur was replaced by his successor, so called Pati Unus (1507-1521 M). Pati Unus tried to develop Jepara as a commerce region/city.

Pati Unus is known as very persistent king, who fought against Portuguese colonization in Malaka (as Nusantara commerce link). After Pati Unus passed away, Falatehan (his brother in-laws) was replaced him as a King (1521-1536). Then in the year 1536, Sultan Trenggono (king of Demak) delivered Jepara kingdom to his son in law, that is Prince Hadiri, the husband of Queen Retno Kencono. But in the year 1549, Aryo Penangsang in effect of coup murdered Prince Hadiri in Demak Empire, just after Sultan Trenggono passed away.

Death of people who loved made Queen Retno Kencono leaving her palace to do penance in Danaraja hill. After killing of Aryo Penangsang by Sutowijoyo, Queen Retno Kencono was getting off from seclusion and constituted to become Jepara Queen with title " NIMAS QUEEN KALINYAMAT". At her death of people who loved made Queen Retno Kencono leaving her palace to do penance in Danaraja hill. After killing of Aryo Penangsang by Sutowijoyo, Queen Retno Kencono was getting off from seclusion and constituted to become Jepara Queen with title " NIMAS QUEEN KALINYAMAT". At her period (1549 - 1579), Jepara rapidly grow not only as the main commercial port in Jawa Island, and also as naval basis either. Queen Kalinyamat known to have anti colonization patriotism, this matter is proved with delivered of her battleship to Malaka to batter Portuguese in the year 1551 and 1574. Portuguese people gave her nicknamed as "RAINHA DE JEPARA" or "SENORA DE RICA". It means that the Queen of Jepara is very powerful and rich.

Queen Kalinyamat was also Civilized Carve Art to her people, which now become unique pledge of Jepara economics. The Carve Art of Jepara is collaborated of Majapahit Carving with Patih Bandarduwung carving that coming from Chinese.

In Relation to all of positive aspects, which have been proved by Queen Kalinyamat, so that Jepara become a prosperous country, well known and strength, hence Jepara's birthday took at her inauguration as Jepara queen, the date of 12 Rabiul awal Year 956 H, or April 10, 1549

This inauguration has been marked with Candra Sengkala " TRUS KARYA TATANING BUMI" or "Keep hard working to develop region".

Source: Jepara Dalam Angka

Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3163632767887664460.post-59634109433662295072009-09-04T23:56:00.000-07:002009-09-05T18:08:08.780-07:00About Griya JeparaGriya Jepara (Home of Jepara) is a home and forum for business and carpenter in Jepara, supported by Jepara Local Goverment.
